The Order of Bravery (Орден за Храброст) is one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most prestigious military decorations. It was first established in 1880 following Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule and modeled in part after European chivalric and bravery awards.

This decoration was awarded for personal acts of battlefield courage, heroism in combat, and distinguished bravery under fire. The example offered here is a 5th Class Knight’s Cross with crossed swords, awarded specifically for combat gallantry. It bears the date 1891, referring to the reorganization and statutory revision of the order under Prince Ferdinand I.

  • Note: The use of "Ъ" and "I" reflects archaic Bulgarian orthography from the 19th century

Ribbon & Mounting:

  • Ribbon: Triangular folded ribbon in yellow with black and white edges (replacement ribbon)

  • Suspension: Austrian-style mount, standard for Bulgarian orders of this period

This is a rare and historically important Bulgarian military decoration from the reign of Prince Ferdinand I, awarded for genuine battlefield bravery. It is especially sought-after by collectors of:

  • Bulgarian royal and military orders

  • Eastern European or Balkan militaria

  • 19th and early 20th century decorations for gallantry

Unlike merit-based or service awards, the Order of Bravery was issued only for acts of courage under fire, giving it a particularly honored place in Bulgarian military tradition.
