The Order of Military Merit (무공훈장) is South Korea’s premier military decoration, awarded to both Korean and allied forces for distinguished military service or valor. The Hwarang Class represents the fourth tier of this esteemed order.
Named after the Hwarang—an elite warrior class of the ancient Korean Silla Kingdom—this decoration symbolizes courage, loyalty, and distinguished leadership in combat. Since its institution in 1950, the order has been awarded during major military engagements, including the Korean War, and remains a symbol of honor for gallantry and outstanding service.
Foreign military personnel, particularly from the United States and United Nations Command, were also frequently recognized with this medal for their contributions during wartime operations in Korea.
