The Legion of Merit Medal was first authorized in July 1942 and later amended in March 1955. It holds a unique place in U.S. military history as:

  • The first U.S. decoration specifically created to be awarded to citizens of other nations.
  • The first U.S. medal to feature different degrees to align with international award traditions.

The Legionnaire degree is awarded to all other eligible personnel, including members of the United Nations Armed Forces, in recognition of exceptionally meritorious conduct and outstanding service to the United States.

Design Elements:

  • Obverse:

    • A five-rayed white cross, edged in red, symbolizing valor, fidelity, and unity.
    • A central blue disc featuring 13 white stars, representing the original U.S. colonies and the nation's foundational unity.
    • The cross is placed on a green laurel wreath, signifying honor, victory, and achievement.
  • Reverse:

    • Embossed with the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" encircling the banner.
    • The center circle features the inscription "ANNUIT. COEPTIS. MDCCLXXXII":
      • "Annuit Coeptis": Translates to "He [God] has favored our undertakings", a reference to the Great Seal of the United States.
      • MDCCLXXXII: Roman numerals denoting the year 1782, the creation of the Great Seal.

Construction and Materials:

  • Dimensions: Height: 50.83 mm, Width: 48.48 mm.
  • Condition: Very good, with the officer clasp intact on the original ribbon.

Suspension and Ribbon:

  • Ribbon: Red-purple with thin white edges, signifying dignity and distinction.
  • Pinback: Features a brooch-style pinback for secure attachment.

Significance:

The Legionnaire degree of the Legion of Merit is a testament to outstanding service, loyalty, and fidelity, both in combat and noncombat roles.
